How your take-home pay is worked out

Your employer deducts income tax and National Insurance through PAYE, plus any student loan repayment and workplace pension contribution. For 2026/27:

  • Personal allowance: the first £12,570 is tax-free (tax code 1257L).
  • Income tax in England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% on the next £37,700, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. Scotland uses its own six bands.
  • National Insurance: 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above.
  • Student loans: 9% above £26,900 (Plan 1), £29,385 (Plan 2), £33,795 (Plan 4) or £25,000 (Plan 5); postgraduate loans 6% above £21,000.

Every rate comes from HMRC’s published rates and thresholds; see the methodology and sources.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on £35,000?

On a £35,000 salary in England, Wales or Northern Ireland you pay £4,486.00 of income tax and £1,794.40 of National Insurance in 2026/27, leaving £28,719.60 a year, or £2,393.30 a month.

Is take-home pay different in Scotland?

Yes. Scotland has six income tax bands (19% to 48%) instead of three. On £35,000 a Scottish taxpayer pays £4,501.07 of income tax, against £4,486.00 in the rest of the UK. National Insurance is the same everywhere.

What is the personal allowance in 2026/27?

£12,570, unchanged since April 2021. It is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000 and disappears at £125,140; on £110,000 it is £7,570, which creates an effective 60% tax rate in that band.

How much National Insurance do employees pay?

Class 1 employee contributions are 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% above that. Employers pay a further 15% above £5,000, which does not come out of your salary.

Do pension contributions reduce my tax?

Yes. With salary sacrifice, contributions come off your pay before income tax and National Insurance. Under a net pay arrangement they are taken before income tax only. Under relief at source you pay from taxed pay and the provider adds 20% basic-rate relief; higher-rate relief comes from extending your basic-rate band, which this calculator applies.
